Dr Colin Breen is Reader in the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Ulster University, Northern Ireland. Colin teaches aspects of conflict geographies, environmental and landscape change and development. His research focuses on historic landscape and societal change, environment and conflict, and the historical archaeologies of past maritime societies. Geographically, this research focuses on the Middle East and Africa, as well as across the Atlantic maritime zone of NW Europe. He is currently engaged on an Honor Frost Foundation (HFF) funded project looking at the mapping and protection of the maritime cultural resource of conflict regions in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Dr Breen will lead on aspects of maritime archaeology, coastal environments and community development within this project. He has worked extensively over the last two decades in East Africa working with government departments, universities and NGOs developing capacity in research and management of the maritime archaeological and coastal heritage resource. Recently he has been involved in a number of post-conflict planning projects across the MENA region addressing the role of heritage and environment.
