As part of the Festival of the Sea, local musicians wrote a variety of songs to express their relation to the sea. You can hear them below and read a translation of the lyrics.

Madagascar is surround by the sea

It’s the Malagasy biggest fortune

It’s good and beautiful

Coastal communities

Living off the sea

For us in Itapera (Living off the sea)

Fishing for lobsters (Living off the sea)

That will be inherited by the next generations (Living off the sea)

For us in Ste Luce

Fishing for lobsters (Living off the sea)

That will be inherited by the next generations (Living off the sea)

For us in Elodrato

Fishing for lobsters (Living off the sea)

That will be inherited by the next generations (Living off the sea)

There are, there are community rules

Where? On the no take zone

Speech: For us in Ste Luce, Itapera, Elodrato

Respect our no take zone to increase the natural resources (Right or not? Right)

There are, there are community rules

Where? On the no take zone

There are some marine resources

We conserve here in Ste Luce

There are some areas

From Akelimboabe to Enato

Co-managed by the community and the 15 committee members

Not only the people in Ste Luce

That manage it

There are some partners

That we co-manage lobster with

We cannot forget SEED, URL

And the representatives of the ministry of fisheries

That co-manage lobsters in our area

With the community and the 15 committee members

Without the no take zone

Ste Luce would suffer

Fishers are happy

The living condition is improving

Remember that from Akelimboabe to Enato is the area

Where it’s forbidden to use

Masks, net’s especially spear guns

The dina is applied to those who break it

We make a sacrifice for the no take zone

We buy a black zebu with white spot on the forehead

We never forget the coloured rhum

That grand dad Dizera consecrates it with

It’s co-managed by the community and the 15 committee members

Conserve the lobsters

To keep them from going extinct

When the no take zone was established

In Ebakika, Ste Luce

I am not going to give up on the no take zone

Ebakika, Elodrato

In the past

The open season was very productive

Currently, lobster stock is declining

The no take zone will not fall apart

Put the berried ones back in

Put the undersized ones back in

Put the small ones back in

Do not be stressed

One must not kill sea turtles

Conserve them without hesitation

It’s for the future of our next generations

Hello you friends. Excuse us because you do not need to be educated

The sea around us, clean it when it’s polluted it’s vital for us

It’s rich in a large variety of resources, first in the lobster

It’s valuable and it’s our gold

You must not take the undersized ones

You must not take the berried ones because if they are extinct

We look like we spit in the air

I said you must not kill the berried lobster

They will not reproduce

They will be inherited by our next generations

Thank you Ste Luce for observing the rules

They get together to save for the future

He he he guys

People like each other

He he he guys

Thay are like-minded, they don’t hate each other

He he he guys

Respect the closed season of the lobsters

They can enjoy them self

Allo, allo, Madagascar

Conserve the lobster

Allo, allo my country

Do not take the berried ones

Allo, allo, Madagascar

Do not kill the undersized ones

Allo, allo my country

Take only the legal ones

Eh! Eh! Eh! thank you DRRHP for conserving our resources

Thank you SEED for protecting Madagascar

And for cherishing it

Thank you SEED for protecting Madagascar

And for conserving the biodiversity

Thank you SEED for protecting Madagascar

And for coming to support us

Thank you SEED for protecting Madagascar

I said do not kill the berried lobsters

Otherwise they will not reproduce

They will be inherited by next generation

Elodrato, respect the lobster closed season

It’s closed for 3 months according to the law

Eh! Eh! Eh! Eh!

Natural resources

Eh! Eh! Eh! Eh!

They will inherited by the next generations

They can not be extinct

Eh! Eh! Eh! Eh!

Let’s thank and be grateful

O!o! Fishers

O! Fishers

O! Fishers

O!Fishers

We must conserve the lobsters

A lot of them have been wasted

They would be extinct

When you catch small lobsters in a pot

Throw it back in to live

When you catch a berried female in a pot

Throw it back in to reproduce

(otherwise) they would be extinct

Wait while they are laying eggs

And the babies hatch until they are fully grown

Before you take them

Don’t take the small ones

They are too small to be satisfying

Wait until they are 20cm

Follow the rules established by SEED Madagascar

You Ste Luce people are not too late

You Elodrato people are not too late

You Itapera people are not too late

Those are the no take zones

If the ones here are extinct

The others on the other side will be extinct as well

Summary

The Festival of the Sea used dance, ethnodrama and the digital and craft arts to raise awareness of fishing community issues and show how a living marine cultural heritage contributes to tourism-related social enterprise in the region.
